塔里克·Alghamdi, a doctoral candidate in computer science, won bet8体育娱乐入口’s seventh annual 3-Minute 的sis (3MT®) competition on Jan. 19点在大学剧院. His presentation was titled: “Towards Truth: How Machine 学习 Reveals Real Collisions in Particle Physics Experiments” and his faculty mentor was Yaohang Li.

Alghamdi was one of five competitors representing two academic colleges during the event, which was viewed by in-person and virtual audiences. 他赚了1美元,000 prize and a spot in a regional competition hosted by the Conference of Southern 研究生院s in Greenville, 3月13日至15日在南卡罗来纳州举行.

三分钟论文比赛 was launched by Australia’s University of Queensland in 2008. 事件, which gives students three minutes to present their scholarship in a way that general audiences can understand and appreciate, has been adopted in more than 85 countries. 旧的统治, 大约有4个,800名研究生, is among more than 900 participating institutions worldwide.

“Preparing for 3MT pushes students to distill the essence of their research so that it engages experts and non-specialists alike,Robert Wojtowicz说, 副教务长兼院长 研究生院该公司赞助了这次活动. 也许更重要的是, 3MT builds a feeling of confidence in the students that they carry throughout their academic and professional lives.”

Alghamdi collaborated with scientists from the Aragone Lab in Chicago and the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility in Newport 网站登录 for his research. 的ir primary focus was to replicate real experiments conducted in accelerator facilities, like the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) at JLab. 利用人工智能工具, they successfully emulated the particle detector machine responsible for recording collisions. 的ir approach enabled them to generate research data at an accelerated pace with heightened accuracy, efficient storage utilization and cost-effectiveness.

Alghamdi said that winning the competition “brings joy, excitement and a sense of validation for effectively communicating complex research in just three minutes.”

丽贝卡·理查森, 化学博士候选人, took the $750 second-place prize and the $500 Peoples’ Choice Award, which was voted on by the audience, 她的演讲题目是“半张地图”, Whole Potential: Enhancing Complex Disease Mechanism 研究 with LexA Protein Interaction Analysis.” Her faculty mentor was Steven Pascal.

Richardson’s research focused on understanding protein interactions which are vital in the pursuit of developing treatments and personalized therapies for complex diseases such as cancer and neurodegenerative diseases. She said she was inspired to find a more affordable and accessible way to do this research.

“I'm extremely grateful for the support I received from faculty, 工作人员, 朋友和家人, all of whom contributed to my success,理查森说. “Honestly, earning runner-up and the people's choice award feels like first place to me!”

“的se students put their hearts into their 3MTs,布莱恩·波特说。, professor of psychology and associate dean of the 研究生院. “Imagine taking years of your work and choosing only what you deem the most important to be 分享d in less than three minutes – but doing so in a way that does not minimize the scholarship or importance of the findings. That challenge is daunting and humbling, and their achievement was an honor to witness.”

的 other competitors and their topics were:

  • 艾米丽·里根,M.S., education (dental hygiene), “Be Careful What You Kiss: Can Your Lip Prints Catch You in the Act?” faculty mentor – Brenda Bradshaw.
  • Hasika Wickrama Senevirathne博士.D., statistics (computational and applied mathematics), “Unlocking Insights: Preparing for Group Comparison in Clustered Data Analysis,” faculty mentor – Sandipan Dutta.
  • Tatiana Zvonareva博士.D., chemistry, “的 Name’s difficile, C. difficile: 的 Story of Developing a License to Kill,” faculty mentor – Erin Purcell.

事件 was emceed by Barbara Hamm Lee, executive producer and host of 另一种观点 on 89.5 WHRV-FM.
